Custom Labels for Coffee Bags and Cans: Material, Size, and Print Method

Quick answer: A coffee label has to survive moisture, oil from the beans, and a cooler shelf, so print it on waterproof BOPP or vinyl, not paper. Size it to the bag panel (measure the flat area, not the bag), put the required info on it (roaster name, net weight, roast date, origin), and choose full color if your art has photos or gradients, spot color if your brand runs on one or two flat colors.

What material should a coffee label be?

Waterproof film. BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) or a laminated vinyl. Coffee bags get handled with wet hands, sit in coolers at cafes, and pick up oil from the beans through the valve. Paper labels go soft, curl at the corners, and smear. A film label with a permanent adhesive looks the same on the last bag in the case as on the first.

Kraft paper labels look good in a photo shoot. They do not look good after a week on a cafe counter. If you want the kraft look, print the kraft texture on a film label.

How do you size a label to a coffee bag?

Lay the bag flat and measure the printable panel, then subtract at least a quarter inch on every side so the label does not wrap around a gusset or fold. Common 12 oz stand-up pouches take a 3 x 4 or 4 x 6 inch label; 2 lb and 5 lb bags take larger. Send us the bag dimensions or, faster, mail us one empty bag and we will spec the label to it.

What has to be on a coffee label?

• Roaster name and location
• Product name and net weight
• Roast date or best-by date (a blank field you stamp is fine)
• Origin, process, and tasting notes if you want to sell on them
• Ingredient statement if anything is added (flavored coffees)
• Barcode if you sell through grocery

Full color or spot color?

Same rule as beer labels. Full color (4CP) for photography, illustration, and gradients. One or two PMS spot colors when your brand is a flat logo and you want an exact color match across every bag, every run. Spot color is how the coffee brands that look consistent on a shelf stay consistent.

When should a roaster move from labels to printed cans?

When you have a core SKU that sells the same way every month. A label on a bag is the right answer while you are still changing roasts, origins, and art. Once a product is stable, a fully printed can or bag panel looks like a bigger brand and costs less per unit at volume. Until then, labels give you the flexibility to change the story without eating packaging inventory.
